The anticipation surrounding the UFC’s first ever event in Atlanta, UFC 88 "Breakthrough," is set to explode this Saturday, September 6th at Philips Arena.

The main event features a long awaited showdown between the former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell and season two’s winner of "The Ultimate Fighter" Rashad Evans.

RedSweat will be bringing you all of the live action including quick results for the prelims starting at 8pm ET and up-to-the-minute play-by-play commentary for the main PPV card starting at 10pm ET sharp.

Rules:

  • To enter, simply subscribe to our feed and post your UFC 88 "Breakthrough" fight predictions in the comments section for this post.
  • You only need to post the winner and nothing else such as method, round etc…
  • The tie-breaker will be the round and time of finish for the main event between Chuck Liddell and Rashad Evans.
  • Any comments posted after the event starts will be void.

It was another close race for 1st that came down to the tie-breaker between Jason and Zane Allan. Jason edged out Zane by a mere 8 seconds. Just so you know in the future the time goes by the clock. I should have made that clear in the rules. Great job everyone!

Important news, announcements and interesting moments during UFC 88

  • Unfortunately the main card battle between Karo Parisyan and Yoshiyuki Yoshida has been scrapped. Dong Hyun Kim will now take it’s place in the fifth spot on the main PPV card. Joe Rogan announced the last-minute change at the official weigh-ins.

  • Roan Carneiro vs Ryo Chonan (Chonan wins via Split Decision after 3 rounds)
  • Jason Lambert vs Jason MacDonald (MacDonald wins via Rear Naked Choke at 1:20 in 2nd)
  • Tim Boetsch vs Michael Patt (Boetsch wins via TKO (Punches) at 2:03 in the 1st round)
  • Thiago Tavares vs Kurt Pellegrino (Pellegrino wins via Unanimous Decision after 3 rounds)

UFC 88 "Breakthrough" Main Card Play-by-Play Commentary

Dong Hyun Kim vs Matt Brown (Welterweight Bout)

  • Round 1: Brown comes out aggressive with a few missed strikes and couple of low kicks. Kim takes Brown to the mat and aggressively takes his back sinking in the hooks. He just misses with a rear naked but still remains on his back. He sinks in the standing rear naked in deep and Brown is in trouble. Brown escapes the choke but Kim is all over him and has his back once again. Kim sinks in a standing kimura but lets it go. Kim is now in position for an armbar. Brown postures up but Kim gets to his feet. Matt lands a nice right hook followed by a nice head kick. The crowd begins to chant "USA". Brown stuffs a takedown and they clinch against the fence. They go to the mat and Brown misses with a choke. Kim takes his back again with 30 seconds left. Brown tries to shake him loose and finally does as time runs out.

  • Round 2: Brown comes out with a nice leg kick. He goes to the body with a nice punch. Kim goes for a jumping knee but lands on his back. Brown grabs Muay Thai and unleashes a few good knees. Brown is starting to pour it on. Kim grabs a leg and works for the takedown. Brown defends well and ends up on top. He is starting to pick apart a tired Kim with his striking and intensity. He lands a few uppercuts inside and takes Kim to the mat. Kim connects with a nice up kick. Brown unphased comes down with a combo guard pass punch. He starts to ground and pound but lets Kim up. Brown comes in with a nice knee and they clinch. The pace slows inside the clinch. Brown picks it up and lands a good combination. He takes Kim down with 30 seconds left. Brown works for an arm triangle and secures it but lets it go. He starts to reign down with some serious leather before time runs out.

  • Round 3: Brown comes out dancing around. Time is called as Brown forgot his mouthpiece. The ref puts it in and the action resumes. They start to trade. Kim drops levels and executes a nice takedown into side control. He misses with the mount and Brown gets to his feet. Matt begins with the knees inside the clinch. Matt defends a throw from the 4th degree judo black belt. Brown lands some solid punches to the body. Kim attempts the takedown. Brown uses a wizzer to get back to his feet but then gets taken down. Kim works in Browns guard. Matt is defending well against Kim’s ground assault. Kim works in a few elbows. Brown is now cut pretty bad on his cheek from a Kim elbow. Brown holds on as time runs out.

  • Final Result: Dong Hyun Kim wins via Split Decision after 3 rounds.

Martin Kampmann vs Nate Marquardt (Middleweight Bout)

  • Round 1: Both guys start to poke out some jabs. Marquardt comes in and gets caught with a right. Marquardt comes back and connects with a head kick that rocks Kampmann. Nate swarms on Martin with punches and uppercuts up against the fence. He lands a knee that has Kampmann in serious trouble. He unleashes with strikes landing a flurry of punches to the head and body. Kampmann crumbles under the assault and drops to the mat.

  • Final Result: Nate Marquardt wins via TKO (Strikes) at 1:22 in the 1st round.

Dan Henderson vs Rousimar Palhares (Middleweight Bout)

  • Round 1: Both guys come out cautious sizing each other up. Rousimar drops for a takedown but catches a big punch and almost gets in trouble. Hendo reigns down but can’t connect with anything else big. They are back to their feet where Hendo stuffs a good shot. Palhares misses with another shot. Rousimar misses again with another shot that Hendo saw coming. Hendo grazes Palhares with a big right hand. The crowd starts to boo as Hendo measure Rousimar up. Henderson tees off landing some big bombs. Rousimar comes back with some wild kicks. Palhares shoots in for a single and tangles up Hendo. He ends up in side control which is bad news for Henderson with 20 seconds left. Palhares rolls for a knee bar right as time runs out.

  • Round 2: Once again they are cautious to begin the round. Palhares misses with a sketchy shot. Palhares desperate to get the fight to the ground, slams Hendo the the mat into full guard. Hendo throws up his legs for a sub but Palhares drops back for a heel hook. Hendo screams but escapes the close heel hook attempt. Hendo defends a takedown attempt with a good sprawl. They start to bang a little and Palhares misses with a shotty takedown attempt. Hendo in the scramble ends up in Rousimar’s full guard. Palhares is looking to set up a submission. Hendo lands a nice little elbow. The ref stands them up for inactivity. Henderson lands a good reaching right hand. Hendo misses with a head kick to end the round.

  • Round 3: Hendo comes out with his right hand cocked. Palhares drops for a takedown and misses but attempts a spinning hook kick on the way out. He tries for another spinning hook kick. Hendo sprawls and avoids another takedown. Hendo lands a good left jab followed by a good right hand. They trade with nothing significant landing from either. The crowd starts to boo as the pace has drastically slowed down with 2 minutes left. Hendo comes in with a few big rights that just miss there mark. Palhares gets the takedown but Dan avoids any trouble with some good strikes to defend. Back to their feet things are looking desperate for Palhares. Rousimar drops and catches Dan’s leg. He has it in deep but Dan pulls out and avoids the submission. Hendo avoids another takedown attempt. Henderson lands two big rights. He pounces on Palhares, landing a couple good shots on the ground to seal the deal.

  • Final Result: Dan Henderson wins via Unanimous Decision after 3 rounds.

Rich Franklin vs Matt Hammill (Light Heavyweight Bout)

  • Round 1: Franklin strikes first with a low kick. Hammill waits for his moment to pounce. Rich comes with another low kick that lands. Franklin is looking for his range with some strikes. He lands a good inside leg kick. Rich with another combo. Rich continues to work the legs with kicks. Rich is already cut under his right eyebrow. He lands a good leg kick followed by another inside. Franklin follows with a few nice punches. Rich misses with an uppercut. The crowd starts to boo and Hammill gets the takedown. He lands a right but gets caught in an armbar. He escapes but is now cut as well. Rich gets to his feet with a nice knee on the way up. Franklin lands another big knee and the round comes to a close.

  • Round 2: Rich has a big smile on his face to start out round two. Rich lands first with a solid leg kick. Franklin is sharp on his feet. Franklin strings together some nice combo’s. The ref calls time to check Franklin’s cut. It seems he lost a big chunk of skin above his eye. Rich stuffs a takedown and makes him pay with a good combo. Rich again with a good combo. Matt can’t grab a hold of Franklin to work a takedown. Rich catches Hammill with a low blow and time is called. "Ouch" when the show the replay. They start to bang it out and Rich gets the better of the combo’s. Franklin lands a knee and some more good strikes. Rich goes to the body with a good kick. He is starting to pick Matt apart. Rich lands a another nice punch kick combo. And another solid kick to the leg of Hammill. Matt grabs Rich’s ankle but can’t get the takedown. Rich lands a good knee to the body. Franklin misses with a jumping knee and time runs out.

  • Round 3: Rich once again smiles for the crowd. He starts to chop away at the legs of Hammill which has been the story of the fight. Franklin lands a brutal kick to the liver that crumbles Hammill and hurts him badly. Rich pounces but the ref waves it off before Rich can do any more damage. In the replay Hammill was tapping from the pain.

  • Final Result: Rich Franklin wins via TKO (Liver Kick) at 0:39 in the 3rd round.

Chuck Liddell vs Rashad Evans (Light Heavyweight Bout)

  • Round 1: They begin to feel each other out. Liddell with a nice left jab. Rashad misses with a big overhand right. Liddell comes back with a good right hand. Evans connects with a solid body kick. Rashad moves out of the way of big punch. The crowd starts to chant "Chuck, Chuck, Chuck." Rashad lands a good leg kick and moves out quickly. Liddell lands a good stiff jab. He follows with a punch over the top. Liddell has a small cut under his right eye already. Chuck times a good punch that lands. He follows with an uppercut, looking to flurry. Rashad barely ducks under a kick to finish the round.

  • Round 2: Rashad comes out dancing around. He misses with a couple of jabs. Chuck with an inside leg kick. They have a nice exchange with both catching some good shots. Chuck comes in with a right hand. Evans comes in with a combo. Evans catches Chuck with a good left hook. Liddell continues to stalk Evans but runs right into a lightning fast right hook that sends the former champ to the mat out cold and on ice. One of the worst knock outs I’ve ever seen. The arena is shocked and Rashad’s wife is screaming like a madwoman obviously extremely happy. Chuck is still out cold on the mat minutes later.

  • Round 3:
  • Final Result: Rashad Evans wins via KO (Punch) at 1:51 in the 2nd round.
