EliteXC’s president Gary Shaw announced yesterday during a media conference call that Nick Diaz could be fighting in Hawaii on April 26. Diaz has not fought since his harsh loss in November of 07 to KJ Noons for the lightweight title at EliteXC Renegade. Diaz put in a gutsy performance but took some shots in the process and lost by way of doctor stoppage due to cuts after one round. Needless to say Diaz was quite unhappy with the stoppage and let the doctor know with a signature Nick Diaz middle finger. |

Nick recently had to have surgery to repair the scar tissue on his eye. Shaw says that he needed the rest but thinks he is fighting on the April 26 card. There is no news of an opponent yet. Shaw states that there is the possibility of a rematch with Noons but most likely later on down the road. Knowing Diaz a rematch is inevitable. There has also been mention of a rematch with Takanori Gomi. Diaz stunned the mma world in February when he submitted Gomi with a textbook gogoplata at Pride 33 Second Coming. A submission rarely ever seen attempted in mixed martial arts competition much less secured and finished. Diaz made a late first round recovery after being rocked by the fist of the "Fireball Kid" early on and went on the submit Gomi at the beginning of the second round. The fight turned out to be one of the most memorable fights in 07 and my personal favorite fight of all time. Unfortunately for Nick the win was ruled a no-contest after his drug test came back positive for marijuana. Diaz is a UFC veteran with a total of 10 fights inside the octagon. He won six out of the ten but had some memorable moments in the cage including a KO of Miletich product and current EliteXC middleweight champ "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler. Despite his willingness to fight anyone and wicked submission game he never quite made it to the top ranks of the UFC’s now stacked welterweight division. A division once ruled by the most dominant welterweight champ of all time Matt Hughes. I will keep you posted on EliteXC fight card updates as well as more "in your face" mma news! |
