Winner of “The Ultimate Fighter 5″ Nate Diaz established his presence tonight as a force to be reckoned with in the UFC’s lightweight division, defeating experienced UFC veteran Josh “The Dentist” Neer via split decision in the main event of Fight Night 15 in Omaha, NE.
The Stockton California native and brother of UFC veteran Nick Diaz proved to be too slippery for Neer to handle, slithering out of threatening positions with ease and putting on a ground clinic in the process.
Diaz, confident in his Jiu-Jitsu, gave up his back numerous times only to end up escaping or locking in a standing kimura to set up a Parisyan-like judo throw which he executed beautifully a couple of times. Neer made the mistake of playing into Nate’s game instead of working harder to keep it on their feet which resulted in the split decision.
Even Josh knew that Nate was the better man tonight, shaking his head in disagreement while the score was being read from the lone judge who scored it 29-28 for Neer.Ā
This fight was a great example of technique over power. It was obvious from the beginning of the fight that Neer was much stronger. He came out and bullied Diaz around for a little but Nate quickly adjusted and used his technique to utilize the power of Neer to his advantage.
At 23 years old, the potential for Nate Diaz is limitless. If he one day brings the level of his striking up to par with that of his Jiu-JItsu he could be a future UFC lightweight champion.
