ESPN.com reported Friday that Professional boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. is considering making the move to the fastest growing sport in the world. He is in discussion with Mark Cuban about a deal with HDNET Fights that would put the boxing superstar in a mixed martial arts bout. If the agreement is reached it would be a defining moment in the evolution of mma as we know it. |

"Floyd is considering fighting with HDNet Fights," Cuban told ESPN.com. "We are going to let him visit some gyms to talk to some folks about what it would take to learn. He knows it won’t be easy. But he is getting involved with MMA and HDNet Fights one way or another. He is pumped about it. He wants to go on to the next big thing. Floyd is a brilliant marketer. He follows the money." Mayweather and Cuban, who became friends during the taping of "Dancing with the Stars" met in Vegas on Thursday to discuss Floyd’s possible role with the billionaire’s fledgling mma company, HDNET Fights. Apparently Mayweather is interested in both aspects of the sport including the promotional side of mma. "When Floyd makes his move, obviously it’s going to be a mega event," Ellerbe told ESPN. "We don’t have a timetable. Floyd is taking some time off, but Floyd understands what is involved. You have to take time to go out and understand what you’re getting involved in, and he’s ready to do that." Floyd Mayweather is undefeated as a boxer and is a five division world champion with a recent win over Ricky Hatton on December 8. The 30 year old has made a total of $50 million for his bouts with Hatton and de la Hoya. If he was to join the ranks of mma he would most likely be in the company of Urijah Faber and fight in the 145lb featherweight division. He would be the best boxer to ever compete in MMA. Though he has a lot of respect for the sport of mma, the move to mixed martial arts would be a risky one. Other fighter’s have attempted to make the transition from boxing to mma only to fail. Some of the athletes who didn’t make it include Francois Botha, Art Jimmerson, Melton Bowen, and James Warring. I will keep you posted on this story as soon as I get the updates. |
