A champion will be crowned tonight as Heiwa DREAM.5 kicks off the final rounds of their coveted Lightweight Grand Prix Tournament from the Osaka Castle Hall in Osaka, Japan.

Some serious battle’s are lined up for tonight’s card which will feature two key semi-final matches in the lightweight tournament. The most anticipated match of the night features a showdown between submission master Shinya Aoki and veteran Caol Uno.

RedSweat.com will be bringing you all of the action including up-to-the-minute play-by-play commentary for the entire fight card beginning at 2am ET / 11pm PT.

  • They are now introducing all of the fighters.
  • Pride Rules: One 10 minute first round, One 5 minute second round, No kicks to the head of a downed opponent, No elbows to the head.
  • Intermission is now over.
  • Breaking News: Eddie Alvarez is out of the tournament due to the cut he suffered in his bout with Kawajiri. Joachim Hansen will take his place in the final against Shinya Aoki.
  • They officially announce that Alvarez is out. Eddie apologizes to the crowd almost in tears as is his girlfriend. He says he begged the doctors to let him fight. His right eye is a mess. It is totally swollen shut and the size of a baseball. He does one of his huge trademark backflips off of the top rope basically blind.

  • Daisuke Nakamura vs Andy Ologun (Nakamura wins via Armbar at 3:41 in the 1st round)
  • Shinya Aoki vs Caol Uno (Shinya Aoki wins via Unanimous Decision after 2 rounds)

Heiwa DREAM.5 Play by Play Commentary

Daisuke Nakamura vs Andy Ologun (2×5 Minute Special Rules Bout)

  • Round 1: Nakamura fought only 4 days ago on Thursday. The fighters start to feel each other out with some low kicks and jabs. After getting dropped by a low leg kick, Nakamura rolls into a heel hook but Ologun easily escapes. Nakamura jumps guard and immediately transitions into a fight ending armbar. Easy win for Nakamura who has now won two fights in 4 days.
  • Round 2:
  • Final Result: Daisuke Nakamura wins via Armbar at 3:41 in the 1st round.

Shinya Aoki vs Caol Uno (Lightweight GP Semi-final Bout)

  • Round 1: Aoki has entered, now Uno is coming out to a Nirvana techno remix with cowbells. Both fighter wait to make their first move. Aoki misses with a high kick. Aoki comes in with a knee and they tie up against the ropes. Shinya takes Caol to the mat right into full mount but Uno reverses and ends up in Aoki’s full guard. The ref brings them out to the center of the ring. Aoki throws his legs up for an arm and then transitions into an omaplata on his leg. Uno tries to spin out while Aoki works on a leg. He sinks in the heel hook and starts to tighten the noose. Uno works to escape but for some insane reason he is wearing shoes which gives Aoki a better grip. They scramble and Aoki takes Caol’s back. Uno turns into Shinya looking to reverse the position. After some dueling for position, Aoki starts to work on a choke but lets it go. Uno escapes but turns right into a triangle. Aoki squeezes the choke in tight but Uno hangs on for dear life. He finally escapes and lands some strikes on his feet before the round comes to an end.

  • Round 2: Caol rushes in and gets taken to the mat into full guard. Aoki works a couple of hammer fists, then makes a smooth transition to the back of Caol. He sinks in a body triangle and starts to work for a submission. He gets a few good right hands in. Uno works some short elbows to the ribs while Aoki continues to twist Uno up like a pretzel. Shinya with only seconds left, works on a gogo-plata but time runs out. Dominating performance from Aoki who takes the first spot in the GP final against Alvarez or Kawajiri. On his way out he gives his trophy to a fan.
  • Final Result: Shinya Aoki wins via Unanimous Decision after 2 rounds.

Eddie Alvarez vs Tatsuya Kawajiri (Lightweight GP Semi-final Bout)

  • Round 1: Kawajiri comes out with a kick and a combo. Eddie fires back with a counter. Kawajiri grabs Alvarez in a head lock but Alvarez drives him into the ropes. The ref breaks them up after a brief tie up. Kawajiri lands a solid right hand. Alvarez lands a good combination as both fighters exchange. Eddie already has a cut over the right eye. He lands a couple of solid leg kicks. Alvarez tees off and sends Kawajiri to the mat with a flurry of punches. Kawajiri stunned momentarily, regains his composure and gets back into the fight. Time is called to check the cut above Eddie’s eye. Alvarez catches a big punch and drops to the mat. Kawajiri pounces and starts to deliver some ground and pound. Alvarez ties him up and regains full guard along with his composure. Kawajiri passes to side control and then immediately into full mount. Alvarez escapes and starts swinging away with a wild flurry of punches. Kawajiri fires back, then lands a couple of knees. Alvarez drops Kawajiri with a series of punches. He backs off thinking the fight is over but it’s not. Realizing his mistake, he pounces on Kawajiri and unloads with a barrage of punches to finish the fight. Great fight! Alvarez will now get some rest before meeting Aoki later on tonight for the lightweight title.
  • Round 2:
  • Final Result: Eddie Alvarez wins via TKO (Punches) at 7:35 in the 1st round.

Joachim Hansen vs Kultar Gill (Lightweight GP Reserve Bout)

  • Round 1: Hansen rushes in but gets caught in a Thai clinch by Gill and eats a series of knees to the head. They scramble for position and eventually tie up against the ropes. The ref breaks them up for inactivity. Gill works some good kicks. He lands another nice knee to the mid-section of Hansen. Kultar gets the single leg takedown but Hansen works for the straight armbar. He transitions into a triangle but then right back into the armbar forcing Gill to tap.
  • Round 2:
  • Final Result: Joachim Hansen wins via Armbar at 2:33 in the 1st round.

Joseph Benavidez vs Junya Kudo (Featherweight Bout)

  • Round 1: Urijah Faber is in the corner of Benavidez. Joseph gets things going with a front kick and then gets Kudo to the mat. He postures and gets in a couple of shots. The scramble to their feet and exchange knees in the clinch. Benavidez with another front kick. He then brutally slams Kudo to the mat and gains back control. Kudo scrambles to his feet but gets caught in a vicious guillotine and is forced to tap.
  • Round 2:
  • Final Result: Joseph Benavidez wins via Guillotine at 2:42 in the 1st round.

Motoki Miyazawa vs Kuniyoshi Hironaka (Welterweight Bout)

  • Round 1: Hironaka comes in with a good right and ties up Miyazawa who jumps guard. Miyazawa comes in with a good flurry of punches and they tie up in the corner. The ref breaks the fighters up but they go back to the clinch. Miyazawa jumps guard and Hironaka slams him to the mat. Miyazawa starts to work on a gogo-plata but nothing comes of it. Hironaka postured up starts to come down with some solid punches. Back to the center of the ring, Miyazawa lands a good combination. Hironaka lands a good combo. They tee off with both landing some decent shots. Hironaka lands a solid leg kick. Miyazawa now has a cut around his eye. Hironaka has Miyazawa retreating with his punches. Hironaka lands a good high kick. He starts to tee off on Miyazawa landing at will. Both fighters now have blood coming from their nose. Hironaka lands a flurry of punches including a brutal straight right hand that opens up a nasty cut above Miyazawa’s left eye. The fight is stopped to check the cut. The fight is called off and Hironaka wins.
  • Round 2:
  • Final Result: Kuniyoshi Hironaka wins via TKO (Stoppage Due to Cut) in the 1st round.

Hideo Tokoro vs Takeshi Yamazaki (Featherweight Bout)

  • Round 1: Yamazaki strikes first with a combo attempt. Tokoro lands a kick right in the pills as Bas would put it and time is called. They return to action. Tokoro goes low with a kick but Yamazaki fires back with punches. He gets a takedown but has to fend of a couple of submission attempts from Hideo. Yamazaki now works from side control. Tokoro gets to his feet but Takeshi attempts a guillotine. Tokoro connects with a big right hand that drops Yamazaki. He pounces on Takeshi and tries to finish but Yamazaki gets back to his feet and out of danger. Tokoro locks in a kimura. Takeshi escapes and eats a couple of solid strikes. Hideo lands a big knee that jolts Yamazaki. He follows with another solid kick to the pills and once again time out is called. Tokoro is issued a yellow card for the second low blow which means a 10% deduction of his fight purse. The action resumes. Tokoro connects with a couple of solid right hands. They go to the mat where Hideo attempts a triangle but loses it. Tokoro works for a knee bar but loses that as well. He transitions to Yamazaki’s back for a moment. The action slows on the ground. Tokoro again looks for a knee bar. A couple of kicks set up a triangle attempt for Hideo but Takeshi has a hand in and escapes. Yamazaki lands a few more punches and the round ends.

  • Round 2: Tokoro comes out and connect with a solid punch. Hideo lands a solid kick followed by some good punches and another good kick. Yamazaki gets the takedown but has an arm trapped. Tokoro using a kimura reverses and escapes to his feet. The ref brings them to the center of the ring. Hideo shoots in with a flying knee but Takeshi catches his leg and takes him down. He works some small punches in the guard. After a stalemate and an escape attempt from Tokoro the round comes to an end. Not a very exciting fight but Tokoro has it.

Yoshiro Akiyama vs Katsuyori Shibata (Middleweight Bout)

  • Round 1: This ought to be good. Shibata is 2-4 with 4 losses in a row and Akiyama who has only lost one fight at 10-1. Akiyama is an 8:1 favorite. The crowd boos as the controversial Akiyama makes his entrance which is pretty bad considering the Japanese never boo anyone. Akiyama is fighting with a gi on. They start to exchange. Shibata lets go with a decent combo. Shibata is taunting Akiyama. Akiyama rolls up his sleeves as if he is about to get serious now. Yoshiro goes for a spinning back kick and pays the price with a right hand from Shibata. Akiyama then misses with a huge head kick and trips Shibata to the mat. Yoshiro passes to full mount where he sinks in a choke with his gi. It is hard to tell if it’s tight but the ref soon notices that Shibata is in trouble and waves off the fight. Shibata is out cold on the canvas.
  • Round 2:
  • Final Result: Yoshiro Akiyama wins via Submission (Gi Choke) in the 1st round.

Mark Hunt vs Alistair Overeem (Heavyweight Bout)

  • Round 1: Overeem took this fight on three days notice. Hunt almost connects with a big right. He bullies Alistair to the mat and lands a couple of good shots. He almost gets caught in a triangle. Overeem transitions into an armbar. He extends the arm and Hunt is finished.
  • Round 2:
  • Final Result: Alistair Overeem wins via Submission (Armbar) at 1:11 in the 1st round.

Shinya Aoki vs Joachim Hansen (Lightweight GP Final - Alvarez out from a cut)

  • Round 1: Hansen misses with a big haymaker and Aoki ducks to get the takedown. Joachim works some small petty punches from his back while Aoki patiently works for position. Shinya passes to side control with grace and ease. Shinya takes an up kick directly to the pills and timeout is called. The action resumes and Hansen misses with another big power shot. Aoki pulls Hansen down into his guard. He starts to work the rubber guard, striking the side of Hansen’s head. He works for a gogo-plata but Hansen pulls out. Hansen comes down with a few solid strikes. Hansen lunges in with a left hand that rocks Aoki. Shinya turns to his side in trouble. Joachim unloads with a series of blows finishing the fight in emphatic fashion. Hansen is the lightweight GP champion. Aoki is in tears from the loss.
  • Round 2:
  • Final Result: Joachim Hansen wins via TKO (Strikes) at 4:19 in the 1st round.

Well good for you! It was ref stoppage and he wasnt ko’ed but its cool if you like to rub it in!Better than rubbing one off, Aoki is still the man though almost go-go’ed him again!

Yeah that’s too bad about Alvarez, I would have liked to have seen him take the tournament. I couldn’t believe how jacked his eye was when he made the announcement.
