Evan Tanner’s Blog Transformed into a Memorial Site / New Details Concerning Tanner’s Cause of Death

It’s a sad day in mixed martial arts as one of the greats, Evan Tanner, has officially passed away at the young age of 37.

Tanner’s personal website has now confirmed the former UFC middleweight champ’s death. EvanTanner.net, which use to be the location of Tanner’s personal blog has now been transformed into a memorial site for friends and family to pay their respects. Please take a moment to visit the site and offer your prayers.

Details concerning the cause of Tanner’s death have recently come to light. According to Yahoo! Sports, who spoke with Sheriff’s officials, Tanner’s death was the direct result of heat exhaustion in the Palo Verde desert.

“What we were told is that (Sheriff’s officials who found Tanner) believe his motorcycle had run out of gas, so he went to walk out in like 115- to 118-degree heat,” Vincitorio said. “He was miles away from his camp. That’s where the helicopter found him. Right now, they just think that he succumbed to the heat.”

In an ironic twist, Tanner assured his blog followers that his excursion into the desert would not be a version of “Into the wild.” He told them that he would be prepared for the conditions and that he would be “fully geared up,” which he was but some things you just can’t prepare for.

Tanner was privy to the these types of trips and had made many in the past looking for solitude and a place to find spiritual resolve. Knowing that he would be going into the desert pretty deep, Evan told his friends to contact officials, should they not here from him for a couple of days. That ended up being exactly what happened.

Tanner was a great fighter and a unique person with more than enough heart to satisfy 5 men. He would never give up and did more than enough to earn his place in the history of one of the greatest sports of all time, MMA.

R.I.P. Evan Tanner - February 11, 1971 to September 8, 2008

I never watched a UFC fight until a few weeks ago when I saw the Kendall Grove VS Evan Tanner fight. Even though Evan didn’t win that fight, I was really impressed with him. Now, after his passing, I have been reading his blogs on Spike. He sounds like he was a really down to earth guy and had many friends. It must have been great to have known him. I didn’t know Evan, but after reading his blogs, I can see why he had so many friends and fans. My sympathy to his family. R.I.P. EVAN

I’ve been following the death of Evan Tanner. It seems that there is a great deal of empathy over his death. Something I don’tunderstand. In his own words he became obbsessed with the desert and the thought of treasure and exploration and the challenge. He studied and read about the desert. Took a month and a half to prepare before going and then pulled the dumbest mistake anyone can in the desert. He tried to walk out when things went wrong. I feel for his family and his friends. On the other hand you cannot challenge the desert and expect to win. His obsession became his death. A death that could have been avoided.

Ask yourselves; Why didn’t a search start when he fell out of communication?

IO am an expert in the desert. It takes me an hour to prepare for a trip into nowhere and I am prepared for when things go wrong. I also know not to walk out during the heat of the day.

God go with you Evan Tanner and may your death be a reminder that you cannot challenge the desert and win.

It is unwise to make presumptions about the desert.
