Important news, announcements and interesting moments during UFC 85

  • The first fight between Werdum and Vera ends in a controversial fashion. Vera was extremely upset in what could be considered a premature stoppage and says in his post fight interview quote "It’s 15 seconds left in the round, let me take that ass whoopin, lets go to round two."
  • The second fight ends in a unique fashion as well. Marquardt clearly won the fight but lost a split decision because of the two points that were taken away from him for illegal strikes. If the second point wasn’t taken away from Nate for what looked to be a legal strike in the replay, the fight would have been and probably should have been ruled a draw.

  • Matt Wiman vs Thiago Tavares: Tavares took round one grounding and pounding Wiman after they both traded submission attempts. After a solid exchange from both fighters in the second, Wiman cracks Tavares with a stiff right hand followed by another that puts Thiago out cold.
  • Jorge Rivera vs Martin Kampmann: It was all Kampmann in this one. Kampmann took down Rivera, took his back, caught him in an arm triangle and finally finished it with a guillotine choke half way through the first round.

ufc 85 fight card update

The UFC has done some damage control after losing their star player for UFC 85’s main event, Chuck Liddell. They have attempted to repair the damage by adding three big bouts to the card which now is eleven fights strong.

UFC.com has officially announced that former two time welterweight champ, Matt Hughes, will battle "The Pitbull" Thiago Alves in the UFC 85 main event. This bout replaces the original match up between Chuck Liddell and Rashad Evans that was cancelled after Chuck had to pull out due to a hamstring injury.

Apparently some good has come out of the situation involving Chuck’s withdrawal and all of the fight card mayhem.

TheFightNetwork.com announced on Thursday that UFC 85 will be a free Spike TV event in an effort to soften the blow to fans of Chuck who were expecting to pay to see him fight.

A spectacular match up between two middleweight brawlers has been added to the card featuring Chris "The Crippler" Leben and Michael "The Count" Bisping. This fight has knock out written all over it and most likely won’t live to see the second round. Bisping recently made his middleweight debut defeating Charles McCarthy via TKO after McCarthy was unable to continue due to an arm injury. The Count looks quick and lean at his new weight and looks to make it two in a row against Leben.

Chris Leben has won his last two in a row with a recent TKO victory over Alessio Sakara at UFC 82 back in March. A revitalized Leben finished off Sakara via punches at 3:16 in the first round. Leben appears to be back on his game and looked better than ever in his last two fights.

The third addition to the UFC 85 card will pit James "The Sandman" Irvin against the undefeated Rashad Evans. Irvin will be stepping in to replace Liddell who was originally slated to fight Evans in the main event. James Irvin is coming off of a stunning 8 second knockout victory over fellow knock out artist, Houston Alexander at Fight Night 13. The Sandman shocked spectators when the first punch he threw, a superman punch, sent Houston to the mat where he was finished off with a couple of punches.

Due to the recent changes made to the card, the Thales Leites vs Nate Marquardt match, has been moved down to the preliminary card.

Here is the official UFC 85 fight card as of now.

  • Thiago Alves vs Matt Hughes
  • Michael Bisping vs Chris Leben
  • Marcus Davis vs Mike Swick
  • Rashad Evans vs James Irvin
  • Brandon Vera vs Fabricio Werdum
  • Martin Kampmann vs Jorge Rivera (prelim)
  • Thiago Tavares vs Matt Wiman (prelim)
  • Thales Leites vs Nate Marquardt (prelim)
  • Luiz Cane vs Jason Lambert (prelim)
  • Roan Carneiro vs Ryo Chonan (prelim)
  • Antoni Hardonk vs Neil Wain (prelim)

Although not official, Jess Liaudin vs Paul Taylor is also confirmed for the event which in the end will produce a total of thirteen bouts. One more bout has yet to be announced.

ufc 85 liddell evans

Breaking news has been reported regarding UFC 85 "Liddell vs Evans". MMARated just reported that Chuck Liddell injured himself and will not be fighting at UFC 85 in London against "The Ultimate Fighter 2" winner, Rashad Evans.

The bout will most likely be rescheduled for later in the summer depending on the seriousness of Chuck’s injury. This means that Evans will most likely be pulled from the card as well leaving a vacant spot for the main event of UFC 85.

The event will most likely not be rescheduled considering over 10,000 tickets have already been sold according to the Wrestling Observer. The UFC has yet to make an official statement regarding the issue.

The "Iceman" Chuck Liddell was originally slated to fight Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in the main event of UFC 85. Rua was replaced by Rashad Evans after rupturing the ACL in his left knee, the same knee he had surgery on following his fight with Forrest Griffin at UFC 76. Rashad was originally scheduled to meet Thiago Silva inside the cage at UFC 85 until he was picked as Rua’s replacement.

This leaves the original co-main event between Brandon Vera and Fabricio Werdum as the highest profile match of the night. The other main card televised bouts include Thales Leites vs Nate Marquardt, Martin Kampmann vs Jorge Rivera and Marcus Davis vs Mike Swick.

Update: According to Sherdog, who confirmed the injury, Liddell has a badly torn hamstring. Multiple sources also tell Sherdog that James Irvin could possibly replace Liddell to fight Rashad Evans at UFC 85.

Stand by for further developments regarding Chuck’s injury and replacements for UFC 85’s main event.

The UFC has added some big names to their fight cards for upcoming UFC 84, 85 and 86 events scheduled over the next 4 months. I wanted to keep you up to date on the most recent additions which include some big names.

UFC 84 "Ill Will" Fight Card Update:

At UFC 84 on May 24 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena we will see the much anticipated return of Ivan Salaverry. He will be taking on Brazilian Top Team member and submission specialist Rousimar Palhares who has a record of 7-1. Palhares actually fought in Ultimate Brazil back in 1998 where he defeated Adriano Santos via TKO.

Salaverry hasn’t fought since UFC 71 "Liddell vs Jackson" in May of 2007 where he was defeated by Terry Martin via a suplex and strikes. Ivan has only fight 2 fights in the last two years and looks to make his comeback in 2008.

ufc 84 85 86 fight card updates

Also added to the UFC 84 undercard is Terry Etim taking on "Ultimate Fighter" alumni Rob Emerson in a lightweight match up and finally Christian Wellisch battling Shane Carwin in a heavyweight bout.

UFC 85 "Liddell vs Evans" Fight Card Update:

A ton of big names have been added to the UFC 85 "Liddell vs Evans" event which is set to take place on June 7 at the O2 Arena in London, England. On the main televised card "El Conquistador" Jorge Rivera will be taking on "The Hitman" Martin Kampmann. Jorge is coming off of a huge win over Team Punishment fighter Kendall Grove at UFC 80 back in January. It has been over a year since Kampmann entered the octagon. His last appearance was also impressive with a big comeback submission win over heavy slugger Drew McFedries.

Also added to the main card for UFC 85 is Marcus Davis who is on an impressive 6 fight win streak in the UFC. He will be squaring off against Mike "Quick" Swick who is coming off of a close decision win over Josh Burkman. Davis has made quick work of his opponents with his last three fight times totaling under 7 minutes. Most recently Marcus knocked out Jess Liaudin at UFC 80 with a brutal punch.

Nate Marquardt will be making his return at UFC 85 to face world class grappler, Thales Leites, who is 12-1 as a pro. Nate was supposed to fight Thales at UFC 81 but Thales suffered a broken hand and was replaced by Horn. Marquardt defeated Jeremy Horn choking him out early in the second round. Before that Nate had suffered his first UFC loss to Anderson Silva via TKO in July of 2007. Leites has won three straight in the UFC finishing his last two fights via submission. We could end up seeing a stand up war in this fight due to the fact that both fighters have extremely tight ground games.

Another big bout has been added to the undercard for UFC 85 as well. "The Punisher" Jason Lambert will be taking on Luiz Cane in a light heavyweight match up. Lambert suffered one of his only two losses out of his eight fights in the UFC at UFC 80 back in January. His only other loss was to the undefeated Rashad Evans at UFC 63 where he was knocked out in the second round. Luiz Cane will be looking to redeem himself after losing his only fight in the UFC due to disqualification back at UFC 79 against James Irvin.

UFC 86 "Jackson vs Griffin" Fight Card Update:

UFC 86 is shaping up nicely with three new bouts added to the much anticipated event set for July 5 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV. On the main card, Joe Stevenson will be making his return after losing to BJ Penn back in January. He will be fighting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu artist Gleison Tibau in a lightweight match that should be highly explosive from start to finish. Also appearing on the televised card will be former heavyweight champ and commentator for the WEC, Frank Mir, who will take on Justin McCully from Team Punishment.

Finally on the undercard for UFC 85, the soft spoken Melvin Guillard will battle Dennis Siver in a lightweight match up. I have a feeling this fight might be over in the first round. Guillard left the UFC after losing to Rich Clementi at UFC 79 to gain more experience by fighting in some smaller shows. He will have a lot to prove in this fight against the 11-5 Siver.
