UFC 83 "Fight Night" bonuses were announced at the post event press conference last night.

Kuniyoshi Hironaka, Jonathan Goulet, Jason MacDonald and Demian Maia all received $75,000 bonuses for their efforts at last nights historical event. All four recipients fought during last nights preliminary bouts. The only bout that aired was the match between Hironaka and Goulet.

ufc 83 bonuses

The very first fight of the night between welterweights Kuniyoshi Hironaka and Canadian, Jonathan Goulet, earned "fight of the night" honors. It was an amazing come back victory from Goulet who was in deep trouble in the first round. Goulet was rocked with a big left hand from Kuniyoshi towards the end of the first and almost finished via punches and elbows before the first round bell rang. Goulet came back in the second, staggering Hironaka with a shot and finishing him up against the fence with strikes.

Jason MacDonald earned the "KO of the Night" bonus for his stunning ground assault that finished Joe Doerksen in the beginning of the second round. He almost finished Doerksen in the first with an early guillotine but Joe, the experienced veteran, hung in there and made it to round two. The total destruction of Doerksen on the ground took less than a minute in round two and MacDonald was victorious.

The "Submission of the Night" went to Demian Maia for his beautiful triangle choke that rendered Ed Herman unconscious half way through the second round. Herman made a mistake that he will most likely regret, falling into the guard of one of the top Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu artist in the world. It didn’t take Maia long once he had Ed where he wanted him to finish the fight and take home the victory extending his record to 7-0.

You could feel the energy at the Bell Centre in Montreal as the 22 fighters, scheduled to fight at tomorrow nights epic UFC 83 event, hit the scales.

3,000 screaming fans (and possibly one Matt Serra fan) were in attendance to see their fellow Canadian fighters, or more specifically George St. Pierre, weigh in today at the Montreal Canadians hometown arena.

All 22 fighters made weight and the main event was made official as both Matt Serra and challenger George St. Pierre weighed in at 169.5lbs. Hometown boy "Rush" St. Pierre received a huge ovation while Serra was greeted with an unvoiced linguolabial trill. Serra wasn’t the only one to receive a harsh welcome as he entered the arena. Travis Lutter also received an onslaught of boos most likely for his gigantic blunder back at UFC 67 where he missed weight and lost a shot at the title against Anderson Silva.

Tension was high between St. Pierre and Serra during the stare down but Bisping and McCarthy’s stare down took the cake. Both fighters rubbed noses and traded words in what was an extremely tense moment. Dana White had to separate the two who were chomping at the bit to get at each others throats.

The fuse is lit for Ed "Short Fuse" Herman as he prepares to take on undefeated Demian Maia at UFC 83 in Montreal, Canada.

UFC.com just tacked on another top level match up to the already stacked card set for April 19 at the Bell Centre bringing the total number of bouts to 11. Featured in the main event will be Matt "The Terra" Serra taking on Georges "Rush" St. Pierre to see who is the undisputed king of the welterweights.

ed herman

Other anticipated match ups include former middleweight champ, Rich Franklin, taking on "The Serial Killer" Travis Lutter, Nate Quarry vs Kalib Starnes, and Charles McCarthy battling "The Count" Michael Bisping.

"Short Fuse" Herman is on a 3 fight win streak since his loss to Jason McDonald back in October of 2006 at UFC "The Final Chapter". Two of those wins were over big names including a rear naked choke over Scott Smith at UFC 72 and a knockout of Joe Doerksen at UFC 78 "Validation". Ed will be taking on the very talented Brazilian, Demian Maia.

Demian Maia has won all 6 of his pro MMA bouts steamrolling through his competition with 1 TKO, 4 submission and 1 decision. He fights out of Sao Paulo, Brazil and has an extremely tight submission game. His last fight was at UFC 77 in October of 2007 where he defeated Ryan Jensen via rear naked choke in under 3 minutes flat. Only won of his fights had made it past the first round.

Today Dana White, President of the UFC, held a press conference in Montreal announcing the arrival of the Ultimate Fighting Championship in Canada for the first time ever.

Finally the Canadian fans will get a chance to see the UFC up close and personal in a live event at UFC 83. White announced that Quebec’s own Georges St. Pierre will be fighting Matt Serra in a rematch for the welterweight championship.

ufc 83 fight card

He also announced the full fight card for the upcoming event on April 2 which includes a handful of top Canadian fighters including Patrick Cote.

“We are so excited to bring this fight to Canada, and what better main event is there than Matt Serra vs. Georges St-Pierre 2,” said White. “This is going to be an incredible rematch – Matt Serra is a unique individual, no one gave him a chance against Georges St-Pierre the first time, but he knocked him out in the first round and took his title. St-Pierre showed why he is a future Hall of Famer by coming back and winning the rubber match against Matt Hughes in impressive fashion last December to take the interim championship. These are two guys with a lot of pride who want to make it clear to everyone who the real UFC World Welterweight champion is.”

So far the signs of a successful event debut in Canada are already evident. During the first 24 hours of the UFC Fight Club presale the event almost sold out with over 13,000 tickets sold. Only a few thousand tickets remains so make sure you order your tickets now if you don’t want to miss the show.

Both fighters answered questions from the press and Matt Serra talked about his being labeled as the underdog for their first match as well as this match. He said that he likes being the underdog and compared his upcoming bout with Pierre to the movie Rocky IV. Pierre was asked about he and Serra exchanging words and if there was anything behind it. He explained that words will not affect him as he is a new fighter mentally and that he respects any fighter that enters the cage.

Here is the fight card for UFC 83

  • Matt Serra vs Georges St. Pierre (Welterweight Championship Bout)
  • Travis Lutter vs Rich Franklin
  • Nate Quarry vs Kalib Starnes
  • Charles McCarthy vs Michael Bisping
  • Mark Bocek vs Mac Danzig
  • Joe Doerksen vs Jason MacDonald
  • Rich Clementi vs Sam Stout
  • Kuniyoshi Hironaka vs Jonathan Goulet
  • Patrick Cote vs TBA

Sources close to the fighters revealed that Cote’s most likely opponents will be Alan Belcher (12-4) or Johnny Rees (8-0). I will let you know when his opponent is confirmed.

franklin lutter ufc 83

The Fight Network reported that Rich "Ace" Franklin will be returning to the octagon to face Travis "The Serial Killer" Lutter at UFC 83 on April 19 at the Bell Centre in Montreal Canada.

Franklin was originally slated to fight Lutter at UFC 82 but had to have MCL surgery on his knee last week so the fight was cancelled. Both fighters are coming off of losses to Anderson "The Spider" Silva and are hungry for a win.

Franklin has been dominated twice now by the champ so I am not really sure what his UFC plans are down the road. If he is successful at climbing the middleweight latter to the top Silva will be right there ready to knock him back down. I guess all he can really hope for is that someone dethrones Anderson which is a very unlikely scenario.

Also appearing on the card for UFC 83 is Canadian Georges St. Pierre who will be taking on Matt "The Terra" Serra for the welterweight title. Pierre was suppose to fight Serra at UFC 79 but Matt was unable to compete due to a back injury he suffered in training.

Fellow Canadians Patrick Cote and Jason McDonald are also expected to be on the card.

serra pierre

It was reported today that St. Pierre will get a chance for redemption when he takes on Matt Serra once again at Canada’s first event (UFC 83) in April.

Matt Serra shocked the mma world defeating St. Pierre at 3:25 of the 1st round at UFC 69 in April. The first meeting didn’t go Pierre’s way and he now has something to prove. St. Pierre was overwhelmed in their first match after Serra stunned him with a hook and finally pounded him out on the ground for the win.

When it came time for Serra to defend his title against Hughes he was forced out due to a back injury and Pierre took his place. Pierre subsequently won the fight over Hughes in dominating fashion via armbar in the 2nd.

During he post fight interview with Rogan Pierre said that he wouldn’t consider himself Champion again until he defeated Serra.

George St. Pierre is possibly the best pound for pound fighter in the world and definitely the most physically gifted athlete in the sport today. He is a heavy favorite in this bout and will most likely enter the cage a different fighter than his first bout with Serra. It should be a quick night for Pierre if he is on. Also keep in mind that he will be facing a lot of pressure representing all of Canada in this match. Hopefully it won’t hinder his ability too much at show time.

This will mark a new beginning for Ultimate Fighting in Canada which will host the event in April. The show is expected to take place at the Bell Centre.

Another fighter rumored to be fighting at UFC 83 is Jason "The Athlete" MacDonald. He recently told a Canadian news source that the UFC is making him wait to fight in April for the Canadian event. The UFC obviously wants as many Canadians as it can get on the card to make it a "Nations collide" type of event. It is exciting to see USA battle other countries. We could also possibly see Cote, Ortiz, and Stout on this card as well.

I will let you know as soon as I get more info on the fight card for UFC 83.
