The waiting is over my friends. Reigning UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture has officially returned to the UFC under a new multi-fight contract.

UFC President Dana White made the announcement today at 4pm ET during a press conference call. On top of that White announced that Couture will take on Brock Lesnar at UFC 91 on November 15 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The event which was originally expected to take place at the Rose Garden.

White, who duked it out with Couture for a number of months inside the courtroom, also stated that the legal conflict between the two has been resolved.

“All I give a [expletive] about is that he’s back and fighting,” White said.

White and Couture had been emersed in a back and forth legal war ever since Randy resigned from the organization back in October. Couture originally left because he was dissatisfied with his pay and due to the fact that the UFC was unable to set up a fight with the undisputed heavyweight king Fedor Emelianenko. Apparently both sides gave a little to forge this new deal.

“I think some compromises were made on both sides,” Couture said.

While White has made it clear that he wants Emelianenko in the UFC, the chances of the proposed mega-match happening in January or February are growing slim. Supporting this, White confirmed that the winner of Couture vs Lesnar will face the winner of Nogueira vs Mir for the unified heavyweight title sometime in 2009.

If all goes as planned for White, Couture could end up fighting Nogueira for the title as originally planned. Couture turned down the fight with “Minotauro” during their ongoing legal feud.

It seems that the mega-match between Fedor and Couture may be more than just a pipe dream. Today MMAJunkie.com confirmed with sources close to Xtreme Couture that negotiations are currently under way between the UFC and both fighters to make the greatest heavyweight fight of all time come together.

While those involved appear to be targeting February 2 for the superfight, it could end up happening in January or February depending on various factors such as venue location etc…

Sources have also indicated that the bout will depend on the outcome of Couture’s welcome back party against Brock Lesnar in November.

Additionally, the sources confirmed that Couture is “actively training for a fight” which we reported in a previous post. Add that to the fact that Couture’s camp is flying in several “larger heavyweights” to spar with “The Natural” and you have some pretty solid evidence that Randy could be facing the WWE superstar as rumored.

Keep in mind, the first time the UFC attempted to secure Emelianenko things fell through mainly due to the fact that the UFC’s contract wouldn’t have allowed the Russian to compete in his traditional Sambo matches in Russia. Hopefully things will fair better this time around.

According to a report by MMARated, the UFC was hoping to announce Couture’s new contract next week as early as Tuesday.

Rumors are starting to swirl that former UFC heavyweight champion Randy "The Natural" Couture could headline UFC 91 as the organization swings into Portland, OR, for the first time ever in November.

Goldenboy, a respected member of the mixedmartialarts.com forum who has provided credible tips in the past, provided the info earlier this afternoon. He first broke the news of Aleksander Emelianenko failing his blood test.

In addition, the St. Paul Pioneer Press in Minnesota reported last thursday that the UFC had Brock Lesnar in their sights for UFC 91. They apparently informed Lesnar of their wishes to have the WWE superstar compete at the event earlier that week.

What does this mean? If both of them compete at UFC 91, there is a chance they could compete against each other. However, there have also been rumors that Lesnar will be facing Cheick Kongo at the Portland event. Then again, with the Couture Saga in full swing and the popularity of Lesnar, a battle between the two would make for one of the biggest PPV events of all time.

While Couture’s participation at UFC 91 is far from official, Eric, an amateur member of the Xtreme Couture gym where Randy trains, has confirmed that Couture is training to fight somebody in the near future.

The video featured above is of Couture training his students during pro practice. Tyson Griffin, Gina Carano, Kim Couture, Jay Hieron, and Martin Kampmann are featured in the session. This isn’t a video of Couture training for his upcoming fight.

Here are some pics of the top two heavyweights in the world, Fedor and Couture, grappling at a gym in LA apparently doing a promo for Fight Sport Magazine. Hopefully a preview of what is to come in the not so distant future. There is a rumor from a pretty reliable source that Randy could fight at UFC 91 in Portland.

The top two heavyweights in the world, Fedor Emelianenko and Randy Couture, reconvened on Monday to have another one of their confidential meetings over breakfast and dinner in LA.

This is the second time the two heavyweight champions have converged to discuss among other things, a possible dream bout, that till this day has been nothing more than speculation.

Like their first meeting, the pair was involved in another photo shoot only this time it seems that Affliction was not behind the shoot. Pictures of the photo shoot have not yet surfaced but some photo’s of the two hanging out were released. (see below)

At first, the nature of their meeting was unknown, but Sherdog.com confirmed on Tuesday that the pair did in fact meet to discuss how to make their dream match a reality. It seems that they are pulling out all the stops to make this fight happen. In the end it comes down to one thing; Randy Couture and the UFC.

Emelianenko and his manager Vadim Finkelstein are open to anything when it comes down to making this fight happen, even if that means working with the UFC. Of course that would involve Dana White partnering with another fight promotion and we all know what happened the first time M-1 attempted to strike a deal with the king of MMA.

“Of course, he can’t deal with us because he can’t deal with anybody,” a still stinging Finkelstein said Tuesday. “He wants to have everything in his own control, but we can’t deal with people that want to control everything.”

The other option for Couture vs Emelianenko and the best course of action for the mega-fight would be Affliction. But any negotiations will unfortunately be put on hold until Couture resolves his contract dispute with the UFC. Until then we can only speculate as to when the "fight of the century" might happen.

Until that day comes, enjoy these pics courtesy of MMARated.com.

ufc sues couture

ReviewJournal.com reported today the the UFC’s parent company Zuffa, LLC is suing "Captain America" Randy Couture for allegedly causing irreparable damage and for being in breach of his contract with the organization.

Zuffa’s lawyers filed the suit on Monday which seeks in excess of $10,000 and states that the amount of both compensatory and punitive damages will be proven in trial.

"We are alleging numerous intentional torts, which have caused Zuffa and the UFC significant harm," attorney Donald J. Campbell said. "Based upon that harm we are seeking to address these matters before a court of law."

The lawsuit claims that the negative statements made by Couture have caused the company to lose money. It also alleges conspiracy, stating that Couture worked with several unnamed parties to intentionally harm the organization.

Dana White, who claims that he has been friends with Randy for 8 years, says that he has tried to resolve things with Couture by talking to him but has been unsuccessful. He states that now the matter it is in the hands of the justice system.

The shaky relationship between Randy, Dana White, and the co-owner of the UFC, Lorenzo Fertitta became known to the public when Randy held a conference at his gym on October 11. At the news conference Randy shocked and surprised the mma world when he resigned from the company detailing his frustrations. In his statement he claimed that he was lied to by White and was never paid his signing bonus that had been promised to him when he signed the contract to fight Tim Sylvia.

The following week Dana White held his own conference addressing the allegations and produced copies of checks cashed by Couture including his signing bonus. In a blow to Couture, the checks proved that Randy was made a lot more money then he was claiming.

Couture is apparently also in breach of a stipulation that prohibits him from competing with the UFC for 12 months after his contract is over. This means, if his IFL team Xtreme Couture competes on February 29, he will be in direct violation of the stipulation.

There is a poll going on at ESPN for the All-SportsNation Team of 2007. Basically you have to vote for your top 5 all around athletes in 2007. In other words, you choose who you think would be the best at beating the others in every sport. The top five votes will make the All-SportsNation team. It’s not a huge accomplishment but I thought we should at least give Randy a shot.

Currently Randy is on top with 64.7% of the votes with Floyd Mayweather Jr. coming in a distant second with 30.2% of the votes. Tom Brady is in third with 17.7% and Alex Rodriguez and Brett Favre are fourth and fifth separated by only a .2% margin. The total votes at the time of this post were 167,393.

So if you haven’t voted already head on over to ESPN and vote for Couture. The pole is located at http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/sportsnation/ballot?event_id=3296 It will be interesting to see who makes the team.

Randy “The Natural” Couture recently told the Houston Chronicle that he tried to arrange a co-promotion between the UFC and M-1 Global for a match against Fedor Emelianenko. Couture claims that Dana White and the UFC rejected the offer in his discussion with Steve Sievert.

“We got an official offer from M-1 to the UFC to do a co-promotion for the Couture-Emelianenko fight, and they (UFC) rejected that offer. Really, the only thing standing in the way for that fight right now is Dana and the UFC. Obviously, M-1 is happy to do a co-promotion like that. It only serves to help them. I think the UFC is looking at it the other way, and it’s like why do we want to help out another organization? The fans want to see that fight. At some point, you have to put that first.”

It seems like Couture is doing everything he can to make this super fight happen. It doesn’t surprise me at all that Dana White and his orginization aren’t chomping at the bit for this mega fight to happen.

The only way we will ever see who is truly the greatest heavyweight fighter undisputed in the world is if Fedor comes to the UFC and that could take a while. By the time that does happen, if it does, Couture will be but a fading memory in the mind of fedor who will no doubt have fiercer competition to worry about by then.

Randy "The Natural Couture said that he is hoping to fight Fedor Emelianenko as early as October in 2008.

The former champion of two divisions recently gave up his standing as the UFC heavyweight champion. He also resigned from his role as one of the on air personalities during the UFC’s broadcasts and also as the ambassador for the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

He says the motivation for the decision came from the fact that Fedor signed with another organization and that Fedor is the only fighter that it would make sense for him to fight. He called out Dana White and the UFC saying he did not get the respect he deserved from the organization. Dana White responded by blaming Randy’s agent and acting career.

"Unless the UFC wants to do a co-promotion with M-1 and make the Fedor fight happen, I’m going to have to wait ’til my contract expires," Couture told HDNet’s Ron Kruck. "I have no intention of breaching that contract; that expires in July. My employment contract expires with them in October. So I would assume the soonest you’d see me fight Emelianenko would be in October."

Randy Couture can do nothing but wait now until his contract ends to fight. Meanwhile Emelianenko will be making his debut on HDNET Fights returning to the ring to face Hong Man Choi, the 7′2" 350lb giant, on New Year’s Eve.

This fight would be a dream match for many hardcore MMA fans including myself. If there is one fighter that is up for the task of facing "The Russian Experiment" it is Randy Couture. No fighter shines more under the lights of adversity than that of "The Natural". This was proven in his match against Tim Sylvia when he defeated the 6′8" 260lb goliath by decision in a 5 round war of attrition. Besides Randy I can’t think of anyone who would even last a round with the hard hitting Russian.

Stick around for more bone shattering MMA news!
