Lets examine both sports and look at the facts to see which sport is more dangerous. Personally I think it is fairly obvious but apparently it is not to a large number of idiots, I mean people.

Boxing: You pound each others head non stop for twelve rounds with eight ounce gloves. Each round is three minutes long so that is a total of thirty six minutes of head pounding. The only way to stop your opponent is to knock him out basically.

MMA: You fight each other using a combination of skills for three five minute rounds. So that is a total of fifteen minutes or at most for a championship fight twenty five minutes. You can stop your opponent about fifty different ways. You can knock him out or submit him with a variety of submissions.

Hmm thats a tough one. What do you think? Basically every injury you sustain in boxing will involve your head unless you trip and brake your arm or something. The sport of boxing is just repetitive blows to your skull over and over again. MMA on the other hand involves a wide variety of injuries. This may sound worse but its not. First of all a majority of the time you don’t get injured period. Now in boxing you may go through a fight without getting injured but you sustained constant repetitive blows to your head. An mma fight could be over in 20 seconds meaning  far less blows to your head.

Another thing to consider is this. Worst case you get your arm broken in mma. Well I myself would rather get a broken bone than get punched in the head for twelve rounds straight. That is permanent brain damage that adds up over time. Just ask Muhammad Ali. Here is good quote from Wikipedia I found.

“Dr. Lundberg replied: “It’s not the deaths but the chronic brain damage that is so frequent.” The AMA reports brain deterioration in three out of four boxers who have twenty or more professional fights.”

In mma you are allowed to tap out before you receive any serious damage. So unless you are just very stubborn or tough you can avoid any serious damage in a submission situation. I have watched thousands of mma fights and seen very few serious injuries. This is a great subject for debate so let the fist fly and tell me what you think!
