In less than two weeks, UFC welterweight champion George St. Pierre will defend his title against Jon Fitch, possibly the most deserving welterweight contender of all time. GSP’s bout with Jon Fitch at UFC 87 could be the toughest challenge of the young Canadian’s career bar none. St. Pierre knows this and has taken all of the necessary precautions to prepare for his August 9th battle in Minneapolis. Journalists were on hand as well as photographers to witness GSP’s training regimen at the Tristar Gym in Montreal for his upcoming championship bout. |

More and more indications of MMA’s developing status as a mainstream sport continue to emerge in 2008. First mixed martial arts hit primetime television as EliteXC debuted the first ever event broadcast on a major network television channel. Now George St. Pierre, one of MMA’s top pound for pound fighters, could become the first mixed martial artist to win an ESPY award. GSP has been nominated for the prestigious ESPN ESPY award in the category of "Best Fighter". Challenging Pierre for the coveted award in his category are boxers Joe Calzaghe, Holly Holm, Floyd Mayweather Jr., and Kelly Pavlik. The winner will be crowned on ESPN Sunday, July 20th at 9pm ET. |
|
Saturday, July 12th will be the last day to vote for Pierre, so visit ESPYS.tv right now and place your vote for the welterweight champ. Voting ends at exactly 11:59pm ET. GSP has earned his spot among the ranks of the top fighters in the world over the past few years with dominating wins over some of the best in the world. In the past year we have witnessed "Rush" out wrestle a four time NCAA division 1 All-American in Josh Koscheck, submit a seven time defending UFC welterweight champion in Matt Hughes, and defeat Matt Serra in a rematch to re-capture the 170lb crown. If that doesn’t deserve 2008 fighter of the year, what does? |
