What does it take to be a cage fighter. What does it take to know that each and every time you enter that cage you have to put it all on the line. Mixed Martial Arts is one of the most intense, demanding, brutal, physical, extreme, and insane sports today. MMA is by far the toughest sport out there in my opinion.
It takes months of commitment, training, dieting, sweating, bleeding, boxing, wrestling and working submissions just to train for a fight. After it’s all said and done the fight becomes the easy part. That is the goal of most fighters. They want to work so hard in training that by the time the fight comes around there is nothing they will see in the cage that they haven’t already seen in the gym.
I wanted to take a look at the ingredients for a cage fighter and what it actually takes to be one in my opinion.
Ingredients for a Cage Fighter:
- Guts - To begin with you have to have the balls to fight anyone at any given time. This is just not the case for a lot of people. It takes a lot of courage just to get in there and fight someone when the time comes.
- Heart - You must have heart if you expect to play the game of MMA. You must have something that will take you to that next level when you are losing a fight and it all seems hopeless. You need something to lift you over the edge and give you a burst of energy when you are mounted in the third round of a pro fight.
- Technique - Lets face it, you must have some type of skills if you are going to enter the octagon. You must at least be good at one aspect of mixed martial arts whether it’s wrestling, jiu-jitsu, boxing etc. As long as you are good at one thing, you can work on building up from your core skill.
- Dedication - Dedication is one of the most important aspects of MMA. If you are not dedicated to the sport you will not succeed. It is plain and simple. You have to be dedicated to train 4-8 hours a day for 5-6 days a week if you want to be a successful mixed martial artist.
- Calm under fire - You must have the ability to remain calm under pressure. You can’t panic when you are in the cage taking shots to the head. Like they say, everyone has a game plan until they get punched in the face. You have to be able to relax, stay calm and think about your next move.
- Passion - You must be passionate about fighting if you want to be a successful fighter. If you don’t love fighting and you don’t want to train and fight every day, its not worth it. The true champions of the sport are passionate about mixed martial arts and usually eat, sleep and breathe MMA.
