The AFL announced today that current American Fight League lightweight champion, Diego Saraiva, will defend his title in the main event of AFL “Bulletproof” against HooknShoot vet Josh Cate.

The event, which takes place on May 30th, will be the first ever mixed martial arts show to be held at Atlanta’s historical Phillips Arena.

A second title bout was also announced between Marine, George Lockhart, and George Allen, a more experienced fighter with over 25 fights to his name. The two will battle it out for the first ever AFL middleweight belt.

diego saraiva

26 year old Diego Saraiva hails from Atlanta, GA and possesses an extremely sound jiu-jitsu game. With a record of 11-6-1, Saraiva has captured 10 of his 11 wins via submission and has never been stopped in a fight. He recently defeated Joe Ammerman at AFL “Eruption” in March to become the lightweight champion. Diego had a brief stint in the UFC, unfortunately ending up 0-3, after fighting some stiff competition including Jorge Gurgel.

Saraiva’s opponent, Josh Cate, is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Hermes Franca who has competed mainly under the HooknShoot promotion. Diego claims that Cate’s 5-6 record is misleading and says that Josh is a phenomenal athlete who has really improved since the beginning of his career.

Cate was absent from MMA competition from 1999 until his return in 2006 when he was defeated by Brent Weedman at HooknShoot Live via knockout. He has not competed since that match and will definitely have to brush off the ring rust if he expects to take out the champ later this month.

The AFL has recently been on the prowl for new talent and should announce some new additions in the weeks to come. Stay tuned for more updates on the “Bulletproof” fight card.

The American Fight League announced today that they will be heading to Atlanta, GA for their next show which will be titled "Bulletproof".

Presenting the show with Bullet Fight Gear, the AFL will be the first mixed martial arts promotion ever allowed to use Phillips Arena as the venue for their event. Phillips Arena, home of the Atlanta Thrashers and Atlanta Hawks, holds a capacity crowd of 21,000 people.

Previous MMA organizations have been turned down by the Atlanta based venue.

"It’s an amazing opportunity for the AFL," AFL Chief Executive Officer BJ Santiago stated. "I know that other MMA organizations — big ones — were turned down, so we feel especially grateful to the folks at Phillips Arena for allowing us in."

The AFL has been busy signing new talent as of late including "The Ultimate Fighter 2" cast member and UFC vet, Dan Christison. Christison along with WEC and IFO veteran, Chilo Gonzalez were signed to long term deals earlier this week. They joined a growing list of top fighters in the AFL roster which includes brothers Rafael and Junior Assuncao, current AFL lightweight champ Diego Saraiva, and Douglas Lima.

With this being the first time an MMA event has been held at Phillips, we can expect to see some prime Atlanta based MMA talent making it’s way onto the May 30 "Bulletproof" fight card.

"We have athletes in our organization that are from that area and would give up a body part to get to fight in Phillips Arena," AFL Marketing Director Sean McClure stated. "It’s one of those arenas that you dream of competing in when you are a kid."

The full fight card for this event is expected to be announced soon. For updated info on this card as well as other major MMA fight cards visit our MMA Events page. Stand by for more breaking MMA news!
