Affliction Announcement to “Change the World of MMA” / Update: Affliction Partners with Golden Boy

As we reported earlier in the day, Affliction has rescheduled their encore event “Day of Reckoning” to take place in January at the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA.

Well apparently Affliction has good reason for the postponement of their sophomore show. According to Affliction COO Michael D Cohen, the organization has plans for a big announement that will change the world of MMA.

At this present moment, I can not give the reason but what I can tell you is that there is going to be a public announcement made and this announcement is truly going to change the world of mixed martial arts. Unlike other similar statements made, the press conference that will be had in the near future will have the affect as I described it.

Cohen went on to say that after the announcement is revealed in two weeks, fans will understand their reason for postponing the event.

Affliction VP Tom Atencio told MMAWeekly that it didn’t make sense to hold the event at the Thomas & Mack Center which could possibly indicate that a new main event headliner could possibly reside in Cali. Ironically Tito Ortiz will be announcing his new contract in two weeks as well.

Tom Atencio also confirmed with MMAWeekly that “Day of Reckoning” ticket sales were poor thus far. It looks like they will be depending on this big announcement to ramp up ticket sales for their encore show.

There is already speculation that the big announcement could involve none other than Fedor Emelianenko, the undisputed WAMMA heavyweight title holder. That being said, a bout between the two greatest heavyweights of all time wouldn’t change the world of MMA.

Which leads me to believe that it could be something more related to a TV deal or partnership with another organization. Let the rumors begin. What do you think the major announcement will be?

Update: Affliction and Golden Boy Promotions announced a ground breaking partnership today at a press conference in Vegas. As part of the new deal, which includes various other cross promotions, the two organizations will partner up 50/50 for a total of four PPV MMA/Boxing events in 2009.
